Export Awards for 2009 Announced –
Exporter of Year Award Goes To 200 year old Waterford Food Company
Flahavan and Sons Limited, the County Waterford food company, scooped the Irish Exporters Association’s overall Exporter of the Year Award 2009 at a dinner at the Concert Hall at the RDS in Dublin last night (26 November 2009). An Taoiseach Brian Cowen was guest speaker at the ceremony and presented the awards.
E. Flahavan and Sons Ltd., Kilmacthomas, Co. Waterford, was presented with the Exporter of the Year Award 2009 after winning in the Food and Drink Exporter Award category earlier in the evening. The Food and Drink Export Award is presented in recognition of export achievements of companies in the food and drink sector. E. Flahavan and Sons Ltd. was awarded the top prize – Exporter of the Year Award 2009 – because of its impressive performance in breaking into the UK market with a range of oat-based cereals which are now being stocked in the major British grocery multiples.

There were a number of sector categories and the winners in each went forward for the Exporter of the Year Award. Following are the nominees and winners in each sector.

Multinational Exporter Award 2009, sponsored by IDA Ireland, recognises the exceptional performance of multinational companies in contributing to Ireland’s impressive export performance. Nominees were: Diageo Ireland, Dublin; Genzyme Ireland Ltd., Waterford and the Irish Dairy Board, Dublin. The winner was Diageo Ireland which sells half of the Guinness brewed in Ireland in 120 countries worldwide.

Emerging Exporter Award 2009. This award category, sponsored by the County and City Enterprise Boards, recognises exceptional performance by small Irish businesses in developing export activity. Nominees were: Card Commerce of Dublin, Critical Healthcare Ltd., Kilbeggan, Co. Westmeath and Garryvoe Foods Ltd., Tralee, Co. Kerry. The winner was Garryvoe Foods for its range of high-quality fresh organic soups, sauces and ready meals which are being exported throughout Europe.

The Life Sciences Ireland Exporter Industry Award 2009, sponsored by Kuehne & Nagel, recognises the achievements of companies in the pharmaceutical, medical devices and allied sectors. Nominees were: Genzyme Ireland Ltd., Waterford; Siemens Healthcare Diagnostics Manufacturing Ltd., Swords, Co. Dublin and Tech Group Europe, Mulhuddart, Co. Dublin. The winner was Genzyme Ireland for successfully marketing its range of medical products and services in 54 countries.

The Services Export Award 2009, sponsored by Enterprise Ireland, recognises the efforts of Irish companies in securing and building new export markets for internationally traded services. The nominees were: BSM Ireland, Galway; Inflight Dublin and Taxback.Com, Kilkenny. The winner was BSM Ireland, a management and technology consulting company successfully working with international companies in the Life Sciences sector.

The Manufacturing Exporter Award 2009, sponsored by Enterprise Ireland, recognises the achievements of manufacturing companies in securing and building new export markets. Nominees were: Easydry Ltd., Dundalk, Co. Louth; Irish Dog Foods Ltd., Naas, Co. Kildare and Magazyme International Ireland Ltd., Bray, Co. Wicklow. The winner was Irish Dog Foods Ltd. for building its export sales from zero to over €16 million in the past eight years. The company has won major contracts in Britain, Europe and recently in the USA.

The Software Exporter Award 2009, sponsored by Enterprise Ireland, recognises the achievements of software companies in securing and building new export markets. The Nominees for this category were: Flexible Contact Solutions, Ballaghaderreen, Co. Roscommon; Jinny Software Ltd., Dublin and Terminalfour, Dublin. The winner was Terminalfour for its international success in providing communication solutions to the public sector and higher education market in the UK and the United States.

The Seafood Exporter Award 2009, sponsored by Bord Biá, recognises companies in the seafood sector that have made significant progress in securing and building export markets for Irish seafood. Nominees were: Burren Smokehouse, Lisdoonvarna, Co. Clare; Glenmar Shellfish Ltd., Union Hall, Co. Cork and Ummera Smoked Products Ltd., Timoleague, Co. Cork. The winner was Burren Smokehouse for its success in exporting 60% of its smoked organic and premium salmon, trout and mackerel to the USA, Europe and Japan.

The Irish Food and Drink Export Award 2009, sponsored by Bord Biá, recognises achievements in the food and drink sectors. The nominees were: Butlers Chocolates Ltd., Dublin; E Flahavan and Sons Ltd., Kilmacthomas, Co. Waterford and Silver Hill Foods, Emyvale, Co. Monaghan. The winner was E. Flahavan and Sons for its recent success in exporting its range of oat products to the UK. Flahavans went on to win the Exporter of the Year Award for 2009.

The Innovation Exporter Award 2009, sponsored by KPMG, recognises companies that have made a significant innovative contribution to exporting as a result of a new technology, product or service, or a new use for an existing product. The nominees were: Aran Candy, Dublin; Comhlacht Eolas International Ltd., Little Island, Cork and Largo Food Exports Ltd., Ashbourne, Co. Meath. The winner was Largo Food Exports Ltd. for the successful launch of its King Velvet Crunch in the UK market. The new product is made from the cassava plant and is lower in fat and calories than potato crisps.

The Deep Sea Shipping Company of the Year Award 2009, sponsored by the Port of Cork, recognises the strategically important role of deep sea shipping to our island economy. The nominees were all Dublin based companies: APL Limited, CMA-CGM, Maersk Line and MSC Ireland. The winner was MSC Ireland which became the first major global container shipping line to establish direct vessel calls in Ireland shipping Irish exports through the MSC hub port of Antwerp, where they connect with the MCS’s global network of services

The Short Sea Shipping Company of the Year Award 2009, sponsored by the Irish Maritime Development Office, recognises the strategically important role of short sea shipping to our island economy. Nominees were: Burke Shipping Group Ltd., Dublin; Containerships (Dublin Ltd) and Irish Shipping and Transport Ltd., Dublin. The winner was Burke Shipping Group with offices in all the major ports in Ireland including Belfast, Dublin, Cork, Limerick, Foynes, Fenit and Waterford.

The Logistics Company of the Year Award 2008, sponsored by Dublin Port Company, recognises the importance of logistics and supply chain management firms to the exporting effort of companies trading internationally from Ireland. Nominees were: Expeditors, Dublin: International Warehousing and Transport, Dublin; Kuehne & Nagel, Dublin and the Roche Logistics Group, Rosslare, Co. Wexford. The winner was Expeditors for providing client specific programmes for its customers allowing companies to quickly shift their buying or selling patterns as market conditions dictate.
