A Full Cabinet Minister for Export Industry Should Be Part of Any Government Front Bench Reshuffle, state Irish Exporters Association
Ireland will only thrive if we play to our strengths. As a small open economy a sustainable recovery depends increasingly on expanding our exports of good and services to world markets.
John Whelan, Chief Executive of the IEA stated;
"Right now we need thousands of thriving Irish companies creating high-value products and services that will provide well-paid, quality employment. Our traditional largest export market, the UK , has become a grave yard for many exporters trying to remain in business at the current 0.9 exchange rate."
"New markets, new funding, new products and new services will be required to get the export industry back to full employment. To achieve this objective a prompt improvement in competitiveness will be required, in both the private and the public sector. The current public sector union industrial action is slowly choking export activity, with exports missing their shipments dates due to Customs officials closing the Port offices every few days."
He went on to say;
"However a greater focus by Government will be required if we wish to get a major acceleration of trade and investment between us and new foreign markets over the coming year."
He concluded by saying;
"A full Cabinet Minister with dedicated responsibility for Export Industry would be a major step in ensuring that an export led recovery will be achieved in a timely manner."
The IEA concluded by saying ;
"The upcoming cabinet reshuffle provides the Taoiseach with a timely opportunity to ensure the resources of the state agencies are fully focused on actively tackling the issues facing exporter and the opportunities in foreign markets, by creating a full Cabinet Export Industry Ministry."
