All Island Freight Forum – Workshop event
The Department of Transport in Dublin and the Department for Regional Development in Belfast have co-operated to bring into being an All Island Freight Forum (AIFF). This group has evolved from the Belfast Agreement and has, as its primary objective, the development of freight networks on the island and connecting Ireland with world markets that are competitive, safe and sustainable. The Forum seeks to bring the collective experience of businesses on the island to the table so as to achieve the best result.
The work of the Forum is divided into five work groups.
These include:-
Being competitive in a sustainable mannerSafer, compliant, eco-efficient, road freight transport,Rail Freight and other alternatives (to road freight, and including Coastal Shipping),International connectivity,Network Management.
The Irish Exporters Association (IEA) is leading the third of these work groups and has arranged, in co-operation with InterTradeIreland, a workshop event which took place at InterTradeIreland’s offices in Newry on Tuesday, 21st June from 14.30 to 16.30.
The IEA has, for the last two years operated the IEA Rail Freight Group which includes state agencies, exporters, forwarders, Port Companies, shipping lines and many others. The group has been successful in re-activating Rail Freight in a number of areas and has a considerable volume of on-going work throughout the island. It is also a partner in a number of EU low carbon freight transport projects.
Coastal Shipping is another main constituent of the Forum’s work and this is a mode for which particularly strong expertise exists in Northern Ireland.
