Cargo Theft Report January - June 2011 by FreightWatch

FreightWatch International, the global logistics security solutions provider, published its ‘Biannual Cargo Theft Report’ on August 2, 2011. The publication analyses theft trends in the United States and reports a decline of 6.8% in the number of incidents (average 2011 value per incident $447,346) from the same period in 2010. It is important to note that the value of the thefts increased in the first six months of 2011. The average loss value in the first half of 2010, if the $76 million warehouse burglary in Enfield, Connecticut is included in the calculations, is $584,875. However, if the Enfield loss is discarded as an outlier, then the value is $286,791.

In the pharmaceutical sector, the number of thefts were down from 25 to 14 in 2010, although the average value increased from $394,000 (if Enfield incident is excluded) to $540,946 between January and June 2011.

In the annual ‘FreightWatch International Global Threat Assessment 2010’ although the number of incidents were down in Europe, the average value increased significantly.
