Cuts at Clonmel Hospital Cause Protests

Between 15,000 – 20,000 protesters gathered in the centre of the town to object to cuts made by the HSE to South Tipperary General Hospital (STGH). The HSE has set out a plan to reconfigure hospitals in the southeast. As a result, acute services, such as St. Michael’s Mental Hospital and the maternity services offered by STGH will now be moved to Kilkenny and Waterford. This cuts the budget of the hospital from €50 million down to €17 million. Many feel that this could make Clonmel less attractive for the many pharmaceutical companies, which are situated there.
