EU and India resolve dispute over generic drugs
An issue brought to the WTO in 2009 over generic drugs involving the European Union and India was resolved on Friday, December 15th.Indian Trade and Industry Minister Anand Sharma stated:
“This is a great breakthrough which will of course lead to a suspension of the WTO proceedings. So the dispute is over.”
The same day, Karel De Gucht, EU’s trade chief told Reuters:
“I reconfirmed we are going to amend present regulations so as to put into practice what has been agreed.”
The case was brought to the WTO in 2009 by India and Brazil saying that the European Union was wrongly stopping and inspecting shipments of generic drugs in transit.
The case has been resolved with India, but the European Union will still to negotiate with Brazil to reach a similar agreement.
