Export Supremo could be the Catalyst to Boost Flagging Indigenous Export Sales, state Irish Exporters Association (IEA)

John Whelan , the IEA chief executive today (1st April) joined with Dr. Michael Woods in the Oireachtas Buildings for the launch of the Joint Committee on Foreign Affairs report on "Irelands Foreign Trade promotion policy; Developing International Markets for Irish exports."

At the launch John Whelan stated;

"The call by the Oireachtas Committee, for an Export Supremo to increase the export intensity of indigenous Irish firms and act as a primary link between the exporting sector and the public sector at home and abroad, is very timely and one the IEA fully support:

- New markets, new funding, new products and new services will be required to get the export industry back to full employment.

- To achieve this objective we will need a focused approach in both the private and the public sector. The Export Supremo could be the catalyst to ensure the necessary focus across the public /private sector and streamline any barriers to delivery of services."

He went on to say;

"the IEA strongly recommend the setting up of an Export Advisory Panel by industry sector to support the Export Supremo , whom we believe would be best located in the Dept of Foreign Affairs."

He concluded by saying;

"A greater focus by Government will be required if we wish to get a major acceleration of trade and investment between us and new foreign markets over the coming year."

In relation to other recommendations of the Oireachtas report, the IEA supported the recommendation for easier access facilities into Ireland by visiting business clients. The IEA have long been supporters of the view that Ireland should join the Schengen visa arrangement which would enable easier travel by business men visiting Ireland.
