Today, 8th of May, the Irish Exporters Association Food and Drink Manager Godfrey Lydon stated:
"The Richard Corrigan comments at his Press Conference today (8th May) are not helpful at all in the current climate, where we are trying to ensure the future of Irish food and drink products and that the UK government does not use it's resources to promote BUY BRITISH and that similar protectionist trends do not take place across Europe and the US."
He further stated:
"The source of food in supermarkets and restaurants across Ireland is very much consumer driven, with interplay between product origin, quality and the cost to the buyer. Irish brands are at risk like never before, with price pressure from imports and a very difficult trading environment and need clear endorsement from opinion leaders."
The IEA Food& Drink Export Council represents a wide range of small and large food producers, who supply both the export and home market. There is no evidence to these companies that the Bord Bia scheme, in over 20 years of promoting quality assured Irish products, has approved a non island of Ireland supplier.
He concluded by saying:
"The information put out by Richard today is both misinformed and inaccurate."
