IDA 2020 Strategy Very Welcome ,"We now need a similar Strategy for the Indigenous Export Sector, "state Irish Exporters Association (IEA).

The launch today of the IDA 2020 Strategy for Ireland , was strongly welcomed by the IEA, who stated the Strategy shows that the IDA have a very solid grip on what will continue to keep Ireland as a top destination for global industries when it comes to foreign investment decisions.

The IDAs' shorter 5 year plan to 2014, goes along way to meet the IEAs' call for a new export strategy for Ireland, at last Novembers Export Awards.

John Whelan, CEO of the Exporters Association stated at the launch;

"The IDA strategy will deliver 105,000 new jobs, in the 5 year period. On past performance from FDI investment in Ireland, this should yield a further 51 billion per annum in export value - a 46% growth in exporters from IDA client companies (in 2009 IDA clients delivered 110 billion in exports) . This is very welcome news to the many sub suppliers to the multinational export sector, and will ensure many of them return to profitability in the medium term."

However, John Whelan went on to say;

"An equally ambitious export strategy is now urgently needed for the indigenous sector, if we are to secure balanced export and economic development."

He further stated;

"The IDA Strategy has put an increased focus on the services export sector .In the indigenous sector there are up to 100,000 business in the services sector, many of whom could , with the right support become very successful exporters of their services."

The IEA statement went on to emphasise two features needed if a new Indigenous Services Export Strategy were to be successful;

1. The use of Public Procurement contracts to stimulate services innovation and export reference sales development.

2. Improve the coverage and quality of CSO Statistics on services exports, so that better informed public policy can be made and results of stimulus supports monitored.
