Irish Exporters Association welcomes Bulgaria and Romania to the EU
The two new member states of the EU from the 1st January 2007, Bulgaria and Romania, will add a further 30 million to the EU population, bringing the total EU population to 420 million.
John Whelan, CEO of the Irish Exporters Association stated: “Bulgaria and Romania are already strong trading destinations for Irish Exporters. In 2006 we expect Irish exports to Romania to exceed 130 million euro and Bulgaria to exceed 30 million euro. Their joining of the EU will make trading much easier and will without doubt open up more opportunities for the type of niche exports we excel in”
He went on to state that: “The access by Irish manufacturing companies to a new pool of potential labour, is also welcome as this will help offset the natural tendency for rapid wage cost increases in the full employment environment most Irish exporters are operating in”.
