REACH: Pre-registration of 30,000 chemicals is a major task for Exporters
“Compliance with the REACH Directive will be an enormous challenge for many companies” stated John Whelan at the announcement today of a series of workshops on the topic.
Under the REACH Directives of the European Union, companies must pre-register most of their chemical substances between 1 June 2008 and 1 December 2008.
The IEA Chief Executive, John Whelan stated;
“The REACH Directives, covering some 30,000 chemicals, has wide ranging implications for manufacturing industry and a wide range of exporters and importers, not just those in the pharmaceutical and chemical sectors.”
He went on to say;
“The timeframe for complying with the REACH Directives is very ambitious. If a manufacturer or importer of a chemical fails to pre-register by 1 December 2008, they cannot continue manufacturing or importing it until they have submitted a full REACH registration dossier.”
He further stated:
“Users of chemicals cannot continue using substances which have not been pre-registered by their supplier after 1 December 2008.
I know that not all companies will welcome the enforced data storing aspects of REACH, however, the Directives has been supported by the broad majority of the member states and the European Parliament.
Certainly, in the long term, the advantages emanating from REACH such as the reduced cost of testing and hazard reduction, the avoidance of double-testing of chemical substances and the reduction in the numbers of animals needed for clinical testing should outweigh the early cost and inconvenience to industry.”
