2010
PRESS RELEASE
Immediate
30TH March 2010
The Irish Exporters Association (IEA) today welcomed the Forfas Single Window report, which details the cost of regulatory requirements and associated administrative burdens that create an unnecessary burden on Irish businesses trading internationally
John Whelan, CEO of the Irish Exporters Association stated;
"In 2008 the Government agreed a 25% target for administrative burden reduction for business to be achieved by 2012. So far we have seen very little evidence of actual red tape reduction."
The IEA stated that the publication yesterday of the SINGLE WINDOW study by Forfas the Policy body, following extensive interaction over the past two years with the IEA, clearly points to the need for a single window system, so that information once provided from businesses to any State body, should then be utilised across the State agencies, and not requested several times from different agencies at different times.
John Whelan stated;
"A simple enough electronic data capture system shared across the State bodies does not seem to be as big an ask in these difficult trading times for industry, and would give a welcome cost reduction of up to €21 million in export /import business costs each year."

Notes to Editor;
Single Window Assessment of the Costs of Trade-Related Regulatory Requirements in Ireland by Forfs.
Overcoming the current economic challenges that Ireland faces will require a concerted effort to achieve higher levels of productivity and support export-led growth. Regulatory requirements and associated administrative costs that create an unnecessary burden on Irish business will only serve to further reduce our productivity and competitiveness levels. One approach to addressing the administrative burden in firms as considered by some countries is the introduction of a "Single Window" system. In this Report, Forfs investigates the requirement for the introduction of a Single Window system in Ireland by estimating the costs it may address and help to reduce for business.
