The Irish Exporters Association today announced their appointment as the Irish trade partner in the pan-European E.C. funded programme to devise a new Promotion Platform for short sea shipping (SSS) and Intermodality. The project will be referred to under its acronym PROPS, and will involve 16 partners across Europe.

The project will look at:

  • What do industrial clients want from short sea shipping (SSS)?
  • Methods of linking SSS with the logistics plans of exporters and importers.
  • Barriers to water-freight, as well as growth potential of water-freight.
  • Operational best practice associated with key performance indicators such as: efficiency, reliability and environmental performance of the shipping services

John Whelan, CEO of the Irish Exporters Association, stated at the launch of the new project in Brussels:

“The success of the project across the European sea routes will depend on active involvement of the many stakeholders in the export and import of goods. Hence we will be actively engaging shipping lines, freight fowarders, road haulage operators, ports and terminal operators, as well as exporters and importers in the process.”

He went on to say:

“We will be looking at best practice internationally based on door to door delivery Key Performance Indicators (KPI) that are decomposed into operational indicators for terminals, ships, trucks and modal changes.”

The Nautical Enterprise Centre (NECL) in Cork headed up by Gerry Trant , has been awarded a significant research and development role in the PROPs project, and will advise both the IEA and other partners.

In conclusion, John Whelan stated, we are delighted that the Irish Maritime Development Office ( IMDO) are sponsoring the Short Sea Shipping Award in this years Export Industry Awards, and we look forward to working with them as the Irish government body for promoting short sea shipping.
