Teva Beats Pfizer to Secure Ratiopharm

After 9 long months of bidding, Teva have finally beaten Pfizer in the takeover of generic pharmaceuticals company Ratiopharm. Teva offered €200 million more than its rivals, and secured the deal for €3.6bn.

Ratiopharm is among the many German generic pharmaceutical companies selling to foreign competitors due to the need for larger economies of scale and increasing margin pressure. Teva controlled 18% of the generics market after taking over US company Barr Pharmaceuticals in 2008. Together with the take over of RatioPharm makes Teva the number one firm in the world for generic pharmaceuticals, ahead of Novartis’s Sandoz
