Trade Facilitation Ireland (TFI) Launches “Single Window Ireland” (SWI) Publication for Irish Trade.

As the representative of the United Nations meet in Dublin at the UN/CEFACT Forum, the trade group, Trade Facilitation Ireland, today (28th March, 8pm) launched its inaugural publication, “Single Window Ireland – Facilitating our Trade”

The publication is a vision statement for a new way to propel Ireland to the forefront of facilitating International Trade. Brendan Farrell, Chairman of Trade Facilitation Ireland (TFI) which is an Irish Exporters Association forum, stated to the UN delegates at the launch:

”Trade Facilitation was a key feature of the DOHA world trade negotiations with potential to accelerate further the reduction in trade barriers and the simplification of trade. The TFI initiative in producing this Single Window vision statement document is to try to ensure, in Ireland at least, that there is a continuity towards more efficient international trade procedure, despite the DOHA round current failure”.

The purpose of trade facilitation is the simplification, standardisation and harmonization of procedures and associated information flows which are required to move goods from seller to buyer and to make payment. Trade facilitation recognises that goods can only move as quickly as the documentation supporting the movement of goods.

According to Brendan Farrell, Chairman of Trade Facilitation Ireland, “in today’s ultra competitive global business environment, the need to reduce costs is paramount to Irelands’ economic well being. Trade Facilitation Ireland is committed to promoting best international trade practices, working towards the removal of international trade barriers and simplifying international trade procedures.

He also stated that “We feel that the creation of a Single Window for Ireland will go a long way towards making international trade more accessible and more cost effective for both SME’s and MNC’s alike. With the establishment of a Single Window, trade related information need only be submitted once, in order to fulfil all import, export and transit related documentation”.

Trade Facilitation Ireland now hopes to work very closely with Irish Customs in order to finalise and agree on the preferred Single Window option, at which point they will then canvass wider industry support and create a real awareness amongst industry.
